YouGov surveys reveal: This is what makes online gambling so attractive
YouGov Study: Opinion poll on the appeal of online gambling
The subject of gambling is still causing a division in large parts of society today. While for some it is already part of everyday life and a fixed budget is gambled away every month, other people demonize the game of luck. Opinions on this topic could hardly be more different, but why are the opinions so far apart? The opinion research institute YouGov surveyed 17,300 people over the age of 18 from 13 different countries between March and April. Here, too, the opinions could hardly have been more different. Much seems to have to do with the upbringing or the views of the respective person.
The fun is in the foreground
The views on the subject of gambling could hardly be more different, but friends of this subject usually find it particularly attractive. For most of them, however, the focus is actually on having fun, as 41% of the players surveyed worldwide stated that they were purely for entertainment purposes. As a result, it is an expensive hobby for many, comparable to golf. IN Great Britain, the USA and Australia, it is almost half with 48-49%. Because of this, it can be clearly stated that entertainment and pastime are 2 crucial points.
Which games are particularly fun?
Online gambling is an extensive subject area. The number of different games alone is so large that there is actually something for everyone. Poker players in particular place great value on the joy of playing, as they are the front runners in this category with 61%. In online sports betting and e-sports, too, fun is very much in the foreground with 57% and 55% respectively. Even slot machine players cite fun as the main reason with 53%, although they have little influence on their own happiness.
The dream of wealth and financial independence
The dream of wealth and financial freedom also counts as a stimulus for online gambling for a third of those surveyed. While the focus is obviously on having fun, the dream of hitting the jackpot motivates you to play regularly. Thus, gamblers permanently have the low hope of being able to lead a financially independent life out of nowhere. As a result, we can speak of regular players who try their luck at the lottery week after week. Especially with the lottery, as well as with the Lös-buyers, the hope for the big profit is immense. Many people have been playing the lottery since they were of legal age, while they are now retiring. Nevertheless, as is well known, hope dies last.
Gambling addiction and financial loss
Nevertheless, an opinion in society is immensely divided here too. Test subjects who spoke out against gambling were asked again specifically about their reasons. A full 28% could not give a specific reason for their negative attitude, while a full 22% did not have the financial means to do so. Another 24% are extremely skeptical, given the low probability of winning. In this area, too, there are extreme cases, of which 16% gamble contradicting their own beliefs. Another 11% think that gambling is generally morally reprehensible and therefore do not want to have anything to do with it.
Gambling in Society
It seems like the individual’s upbringing makes a lot of difference. In some households, gambling was already demonized at the beginning of their upbringing, which is why these people maintain their negative attitude even into adulthood. For others, on the other hand, playing online together is part of their circle of friends, just like beer is part of football for others. There is hardly a topic that divides society’s opinion as much as online gambling can. In any case, there is no right answer, which is why everyone has to find out for themselves how they feel about and deal with the topic. Responsible gaming should definitely be a priority when the charms of gambling are enjoyed.
